UKZN’s aspirant crop of new scientists were put through their paces during the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science’s annual Orientation Week.
Buzzing with enthusiasm, the new students were confident they had what it takes to tackle the challenge of tertiary education.
After being warmly welcomed by the College Dean for Teaching and Learning, Professor Bala Pillay, the new recruits heard from current student, Mr Philani Ntuli, exactly how much hard work it will entail to be a successful student – and the rewards awaiting those who persevere.
The new students were also briefed on relevant topics such as campus safety, student support services, student governance, how to use the library and the LANs, student housing and residence life, sports facilities available, student funding and most importantly, essential university work habits for success.
For a change in tempo, Dr Tanja Reinhardt from UKZN’s Science Centre entertained the crowds with her fun and interactive science show.
After formal procedures, the class of 2016 were split into buddy groups and dispersed to tour the campus and start registering.
Competition for places in the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science at UKZN is stiff, with demand far outweighing availability. The new first year students had the satisfaction of knowing that they had been offered a place based on their excellent matric results.
Now it is up to them to prove that they can maintain their upward trajectory! |
