UKZN’s School of Engineering hosted a successful 2016 Parents’ Day in the UNITE Building on the Howard College campus. More than 500 parents attended their day and were addressed by the UKZN DVC for Research, Professor Jonathan Blackledge, and the Dean and Head of School for Engineering, Professor Cristina Trois. Student support staff as well financial aid, administrative and campus security staff were present to chat to parents and advise them on University procedures and events. Present amongst the new recruits was proud father Mr Godfrey Mthembu of Umzinto, who was accompanied by his son, Mr Ibrahim Mthembu. As the eldest son, Ibrahim is the first person in his extended family to attend university. Having flown through matric and graduated from Umzinto Secondary with a flush of A’s and B’s, he is all set to tackle his BSc Electrical Engineering degree – a choice he made after advise from his father and research that he carried out on his own.
Ibrahim has his work cut out for him: his first semester will be taken up with modules including Chemistry for Engineers, Technical Communication for Engineers, Engineering Drawing, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Engineering Physics. He was confident that he was up to the challenge. |
