Dr Roshila Moodley

Dr Moodley is a seasoned lecturer with over eighteen years of experience in her field. She is an NRF rated researcher, a member of the UKZN Nanotechnology Platform (NanoHealth Pillar) and a long-standing academic in the School of Chemistry & Physics, and Science Access Programme. 

She has a strong postgraduate and publication record and has capacitated many students from developing countries, as a scientific host. Dr Moodley’s research endeavours are also aligned to national transformation and equity imperatives as she promotes gender equality in research.

Research Areas:   Dr Roshila Moodley’s research focuses primarily on indigenous medicinal plant species found in South Africa, and lies at the interface of natural products, analytical chemistry and nanotechnology. Her research goals are:
  • to identify potential nutraceuticals from South African plant species in response to food and nutrition insecurity in the country,
  • to identify active biomolecules in medicinal plants with potential as structural leads for new drug candidates,
  • to find solutions using green nanotechnology-based materials to overcome health-related issues.
